Sustainable Fishing - Social Studies

 Hi everyone, today in Social Studies we are looking at Sustainable Fishing.

Is Sustainable Fishing even possible? I do not think that in the near future sustainable fishing will be possible. People have been fishing to feed their families and local communities, which has led to a massive amount of aquatic animals dying each year. Fishers have been removing more than 77 billion kilograms ( 170 billion pounds) of wildlife from the sea. More and more of our marine life are disappearing. Turtles are getting caught in nets, as well as dolphins seeking nets as a way to get food. While that being said, in order to prevent this from happening, fishers will need to start using sustainable fishing practices. As the common methods produced such as gill netting and trawling; it will be difficult to meet such demand during the ongoing actions of these methods.

How is commercial fishing a threat to dolphins and birdlife (bycatch)? Commercial fishing is a daily life serious threat to dolphins and birdlife. Why? It is because equipment like Purse seining, longlining and many other types of fishing, can result in a lot of bycatch. The definition of bycatch is when you catch species that weren't purposely targeted. The common bycatch species that were accidentally caught are dolphins, birdlife, sharks, turtles and many other species. There is around 40% of bycatch in fishing, 10,000 bycatch dolphins each year in France, and upsettingly it's estimated that 300,000 dolphins, whales, and porpoises are killed bycatch. We need to put an end to this promptly, although, commercially won't be possible.

Corrosion of Metals - Science

Aim: To investigate the factors that cause rusting in iron.

Equipment: Eight test tubes, test tube rack, a bung, four iron nails, hot water, vaseline gel, nail polish or paint, zinc pellets or magnesium ribbon.

Method:

1. Label eight test A - H and place them in a test tube rack.

2. Fill all test tubes with equal volumes of water - enough to cover the nails.

3. Test tube contents:

A = Nail

B = Tap water + nail.

C = Salty water + nail.

D = Boiled water, oil + nail.

E = CaCI, bung + nail

F = Water, vaseline + nail

G = Water + painted nail

H = Zinc, water + nail

3.) Leave the test tubes for at least 3 days.

Hypothesis:  A-C will rust especially C. While D-G is not gonna rust.

Shark Finning - Social Studies

Hi everyone, today in Social Studies we are looking at Shark Finning.

What is Shark Finning? Shark finning is when people cut off living sharks, fin and throw them back into the ocean, where it dies a slow and painful death. It is used in traditional Chinese dish that exists 1000 years before and it is called Shark-fin soup. It is considered a rare delicacy consumed by only the Chinese high class back in the day. The definition of the delicacy is something rare or expensive that is eaten during special occasions.

How is this impacting our oceans? If Sharks go instinct and disappear. The food chain cycle would collapse and the ecosystem would be torn. Especially Sharks are top of the food chain. That being said, we must put a stop to this issue. However, there is currently a new huge problem happening which is where people are preparing dishes out of Sharks meat. This will likely reduce the population of sharks even further.

The Starfish Poem - Social Studies

 What is the main message of this poem? That even the smallest change can make a difference.

Give evidence: The last sentence saying "it made a difference for that one"

Include an image:

THE  STARFISH  POEM

Once upon a time, there was a wise man

who used to go to the ocean

to do his writing.

He had a habit of walking

on the beach

before he began his work.

One day he was walking along

the shore.

As he looked down the beach,

he saw a human

figure moving like a dancer.

He smiled to himself to think

of someone who would

dance to the day.

So he began to walk faster

to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw

that it was a young man

and the young man wasn't dancing,

but instead, he was reaching

down to the shore,

picking up something

and very gently throwing it

into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out,

"Good morning! What are you doing?"

The young man paused,

looked up and replied,

"Throwing starfish in the ocean."

"I guess I should have asked,

why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"

"The sun is up and the tide is going out.

And if I don't throw them in they'll die."

"But, young man, don't you realize that

there are miles and miles of beach

and starfish all along with it.

You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely.

Then bent down, picked up another starfish

and threw it into the sea,

past the breaking waves and said-

"It made a difference for that one."

Newspaper Article - Social Studies

 Hi there,

Today in Social Studies, we have been creating our own Articles about the topic we are learning this term, GPGP (The Great Pacific Garbage Patch). We had to give an explanation about what the garbage patch is, how it is affecting the world as well as us humans, along with some more information. I have created my article on Canva. I hope you like it and learned something new.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Hi there,

In Term 2 in Social Studies, we are focusing on the ocean of how it is polluted with garbage and plastics. We are mainly looking at GPGP which stands for 'Great Pacific Garbage Patch". We were assigned to create a slideshow about GPGP along with some question answering, information about it and as always sharing it on our blogs. Here is my work and I hope you learn something new from this.
