Aerodynamics Flight - Science

FLIGHT

Aim: To learn about flight and Aerodynamics.

  • In your groups of 3 you will make a paper plane and measure its distance and behaviour.
  • In groups of 3 you will make a water rocket and record its distance and behaviour.
Image result for flight forces

Definition:
The study of the properties of moving air and the interaction between the air and solid bodies moving through it.

4 forces of flight:

  1.  Gravity
  2.  Thrust
  3.  Lift
  4.  Drag

Paper Plane:

Material:

1. Paper
2. Large amount of space

Steps:

1. Fold the paper in half / portrait way
2. Create triangle shapes up the top that lines up with the line down the middle.
3. Then do the rest like the normal paper plane and your finished.

Plane Type
Distance
Behaviour
Normal
4mCurved to the side

Ailerons
4.2m
It used gravity and pulled to the ground at the end.
Rudder
2.8m
It dropped as soon as Keyana threw it.

Conclusion:
Today one of our experiments were involved paper planes. What we did was to create a paper plane then use different strategies each time we measured how far the plane goes. Once I threw the paper plane with the paper clip on it, I knew straight away that it was going to fall straight to the ground because the paper clip adds more weight onto the paper.

Here are the two strategies we used for our paper plane:
We cut out Ailerons for the wings
We used a paper clip to give the plane more weight.

My Highlights about Term 1

Through out Term one so far, it has been great and enjoyable. I am liking all of the new subjects / modules and is looking forward to learn more about them. I will be telling you my top highlights about this term and I hope you enjoy it.

Playback P.E:
My first highlight is Playback P.E. In P.E we got to learn and try new games like, Ki o rahi, Multi ball, Long kickball and Bench ball. We got to work with a different class, 7/8Ds and also got to work with the deputy principal Mr Good Fellow. My favourite part about P.E was when we got into groups and started playing the games and started doing the physical stuff. Out of all of the games, my top favourite one was multi ball because there were 4 types of sports which are Netball,Soccer,Basketball and Touch and we did class vs class.

Technology / Foods:
My second highlight is Food Technology. In Technology we started organizing our groups, talking about the rules around the kitchen area and finding out who are our teachers. I was in a group with Chloe, Sharnarnia and Vin. The foods we made were, Wraps, Jiffy Snacks, Cheese rolls, Sushi and Healthy Burgers. The most enjoyable one I liked to make was Sushi because my group got to make a different type/shape of sushi that is called a Temaki / Sushi Cone.

Balloon Chemistry - Science

Aim: To see which chemical
mix creates the most gas.

Hypothesis: I think both of the experiments will have different reactions, or maybe one of them will fail and the other will work successfully.

Materials:
  1.  Baking Soda
  2. Salt
  3. Vinegar
  4. Plastic Bottle x2
  5. Balloons
  6. Science Spoon
Steps:
  1.  Put the dry ingredients in the balloon
  2. Put the wet ingredients in the bottle
  3.  Wait and see what happens

Rainbow paper - Science

Rainbow Paper

Aim: To separate colours by using the process of chromatography.

 Materials:

  1. Filter paper

  2. Felt pens

  3. Clear cup

  4. Water

  5. Pencil

Process:

Step 1: Rule 1cm on the paper

Step 2: Draw a slight line on the paper and add two dots using felt pens

Step 3: Get the plastic cup put the paper in there with the dots at the bottom,

but not touching the bottom completely.

Step 4: Add a little bit of water

Step 5: Fold the top of the paper

Step 6: Wait and see what happens

Conclusion: What have I learnt from this experiment?

I learned that random materials can make something interesting.

I learned that the water makes the colours travel up the paper, not down
and also moves in different speeds.

What I have observed was the colours smudging together
making different colours and moving to different directions.

Change and Challenges - Hurumanu drama

In week 10 my class 7/8Sh and 7/8Ds has started doing a new hurumanu subject, drama. Our teacher is Mrs Clark and we started off playing 5 drama games. One of the games we played was freeze frame.  We had get into groups and the teacher had given us one of the aspects of Hauora and we had to make up a play and perform it in front of the class. I was in a group with Sierra, Janel and Christian. The topic we have been given from the teacher was Spiritual Well - being. Our captions were saying the name of our church and doing the praying action.

The four aspects of Hauora:
Taha Tinana - physical well-being
Taha hinengaro - Mental and emotional well being
Taha whanau - Social well - being
Taha wairua - Spiritual well - being

Example of the 4 aspects of Hauora:

Taha Tinana is about your physical well being, like eating healthy, exercising and staying active/fit.

Taha hinengaro is about your mental and emotional well being, like your brain/thinking and your feelings.

Taha whauau is about your Social well being, like your friends and family and caring, belonging and relationships.

Taha wairua is about your Spiritual well being, like your beliefs, the search for meaning and purpose in life and personal identify and self-awareness.
