All Summer in a Day - English

A Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury

Find 3 words you don't know the meaning of. Look them up and write the definitions.

1. Solemn - Formal and Dignified.

2. Dimly - With a faint light: not brightly.

3. Tumultuously - Making a uproar or loud, confused noise.

Discuss the Exposition in the story - What are the characters, setting and mood.

Characters: Margot, William and Children

Setting: Planet Venus

Mood: Rain, Sadness, Stagnant and Depressive

List and label one Metaphor, one Simile, and one example of Sensory language from the story.

Metaphor - I think the sun is a flower, that blooms for just one hour.

Simile - They stood as if someone has driven them, like so many stakes, into the floor.

Sensory Language - "It was as if, in the midst of a film concerning an avalanche, a tornado, a hurricane, a volcanic eruption, something had, first, gone wrong with the sound apparatus, thus muffling and finally cutting off all noise, all of the blasts and repercussions and thunders, and then, second, ripped the film from the projector and inserted in its place a beautiful tropical slide which did not move or tremor."

List and label an example of show not tell from the story.

"And once, a month ago, she had refused to shower in the school shower rooms, had clutched her hands to her ears and over her head, screaming the water mustn’t touch her head."

"The children lay out, laughing, on the jungle mattress, and heard it sigh and squeak under them resilient and alive. "

Live Aid - Social Studies

Choose a song from Live Aid: Radio Ga Ga by Queen

Why do you think the artist used this song for their performance?

In my opinion they chose this song for their performance because it was a worldwide single success for the band, that everyone enjoyed and loved. The song reached number one in 19 countries, number two in the UK Singles Chart and the Australian Kent Music Report and number 16 on the US billboard Hot 100.

Do you think Artists now could start a similar concert in 2021?

Yes because music in these days are very popular and I think if a famous artist today did a fundraiser concert like back then in the 1983-1985, it would really help the world become better with everything that is happening now.  Such as Racism Black lives matter and Asian live matter.

Include a video link to your favourite song from either Wembley or Philadelphia.

How significant is music and musicians today in affecting change in the world. (Include Examples)

Music and Musicians today is affecting the change in the world by the style and language. In today's music there is too much violent choreography and swearing which is not good for young children to experience. This is important so we can influence the young ones to know that this is not something to learn from.

Making Salt 2 - Science

Aim: To produce copper sulfate salt by reacting copper oxide with an acid.

Equipment: Copper oxide powder, dilute sulfate acid, 50 mL measuring cylinder, two 100 mL beakers, Bunsen burner, tripod, gauze mat, funnel, filter paper, thermometer, spatula, evaporating basin, stirring rod.

Method:

1. Add 20 mL of sulfuric acid to a 100 mL beaker. Heat the acid until it reaches 70°C. Turn off your Bunsen burner.

2. Once heated, use a spatula to add pea-sized portions of copper oxide to the beaker. Stir the mixture for 30 seconds.

3. Repeat step 2 until no more will dissolve. Allow the beaker to cool.

4. Fold the filter paper and place it in the funnel. Place the filter funnel into the second beaker.

5. Make sure the beaker is cool enough to hold at the top. The contents should still be hot. You may need your teacher to complete this step.

6. Gently swirl the contents of the beaker to mix, and then pour into the filter paper in the funnel. Allow to filter through.

7. Rinse the beaker you used to heat the mixture previously, and place it back on top of your tripod filled with 50-60 mL of water.

8. Place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker and carefully pour some of the solution from the beaker into the evaporating basin.

9. Gently heat the beaker until the solution in the evaporating basin has reduced by half.

10. Leave the evaporating basin to cool. Once cool, move the evaporating basin to a warm place where it will not be disturbed and observe over the next few days. Blue copper sulfate crystals should form.

Observations: Bubbles and blue acid appeared as we added the copper acid into the sulfate acid, using a funnel and filter paper.

Art: Michael Mew

 Hi there,

In this blog post I will be writing about what I have been working on in Art. We combined a photo montage with drawing and painting, this art was inspired by Micheal Mew. We had to cut pieces that really caught our eyes, out of an magazine that we liked. Once we had enough images, we got a plain sheet of paper to organise our images on and create variety of different montages, and find out which one would be our final product. Later we drew thumbnail sketches of our montage to think of ideas to add onto our art, to make it more creative and appealing.
