Vietnam Song - Social Studies

John Lennon "Give peace a chance"

Title: Give peace a chance

What is "Give peace a chance" about?

John Lennon's message in his song is saying war does not solve all problems but if you "give peace a chance" it may be a better solution to solve all the problems in war.

Facts about the song:

John Lennon wrote this song to be sung during demonstrations such as The Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam. The phrase "give peace a chance" had come to spontaneously to Lennon while answering a reporters question at a "bed-in". This was Lennon's way to protest war and promote peace by staying in bed all day.

Lyrics:

Ev'rybody's talking about
Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism, Ragism, Tagism
This-ism, that-ism, is-m, is-m, is-m
All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance
C'mon
Ev'rybody's talking about Ministers
Sinisters, Banisters and canisters
Bishops and Fishops and Rabbis and Pop eyes
And bye bye, bye byes
All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance
Let me tell you now
Ev'rybody's talking about
Revolution, evolution, masturbation
Flagellation, regulation, integrations
Meditations, United Nations
Congratulations
All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance
Ev'rybody's talking about
John and Yoko, Timmy Leary, Rosemary
Tommy Smothers, Bobby Dylan, Tommy Cooper
Derek Taylor, Norman Mailer
Alan Ginsberg, Hare Krishna
Hare, Hare Krishna
All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance

Making Salt - Science

Aim: To produce sodium chloride salt by carrying out a neutralization reaction.

Equipment: 50 mL and 200 mL beakers, dilute HCI (Hydrochloride acid), dilute NaOH (Sodium hydroxide), 25 mL measuring cylinder, a glass stirring rod, spotting tile, Universal indicator solution, tripod, gauze mat, Bunsen burner, evaporating basin.

Method:

1. Using the measuring cylinder measure 10 mL of HCI and pour it into your 50 mL beaker. Add dilute NaOH a few drops at a time while stirring with the glass rod.

2. Every 10-15 drops stop adding the NaOH and use the glass stirring rod to transfer a drop of the solution to a spotting tile. Test its pH using Universal indicator.

3. Keep adding NaOH and testing the solution by repeating step 2. As you get closer to neutral you may need to test the solution after every drop.

4. Pour the neutral solution into an evaporating basin and evaporate the water out of the solution using the equipment set up shown above.

Observations: We made a variety of colours such as purple, light pink, and red. The aim of this was to make green which we couldn't make.

Creative Writing Setting Descriptions - English

For my next creative writing task I have to write short setting, opening descriptions. The settings I will be writing about is Night time and a ghost town.

1. The room turned dark as the time of the day changes to night time. My ears started ringing while listening to the noisy crickets outside. Bushes swaying as hedge jogs in motion. Sneaky kiwi birds cheeping at each other. I hop in bed into my comfy, warm blankets ready to shut my eyes and get some rest.

2. Sky filled with grey clouds, murky fog flowing everywhere, houses left empty as there is silence lingered all over town. Old and rusty paint sitting there for decades, coming off buildings. Weak pillars attached to each building, wrecked and broken, making the town fall apart and crumble.

Two Perspectives - Beatlemania

Perspective 1 - For Tour

Fans: For people that love and are obsessed with The Beatles, they would always be supportive to them no matter what. Every Beatles concert that happens, the fans would always attend and are eager to go. So whatever they say that is negative and offensive, people would still love them and still want them to tour even though they compared themselves with Jesus Christ.

Perspective 2 - Against Tour

Religious: Religious people were throwing threats and protests, particularly throughout the Bible Belt in the Southern United States. Some radio stations stopped playing Beatles songs, records were publicly burned and pressed conferences were cancelled. Religious people feel this way because they were offended about the comment The Beatles announced about Jesus, and how it affected them because they are Christians.

Beatlemania - Social Studies

The Beatles "She loves you" 1964

She loves you

Title: She Loves You

What is the song "she loves you" about?

It's about some poor guy who thinks he has lost his girl for good, but he's redeemed when he finds out from a friend that she still loves him.

How different does it sound to music from the 1940s?

The differences between the 1940s, 1960s songs.

The 1940s have more of an upbeat rhythm and the speed of the songs are faster.

On the other hand, the 1960s songs have a boring rhythm and the speed of their songs are slower.

Show don't Tell narrative openings - English

For my next creative writing task, I have to write some show don't tell, narrative opening sentences. This can be reflected from the images given or made up ones from our own knowledge. These are the three images that I will be showing not telling, what is happening. Hope you like it.

1. Another day as my busy fingers are moving along my keyboard, in a room filled with boredom.

2. I had this nauseous feeling of goosebumps running down my body, as the cold air is flowing on my skin. Then a man walked past me and gave me a glare.

3. A smell of smoke lingered in my room as I immediately sprinted out and froze, watching the blistering flames from another house.

Show don't tell - English

Show don't Tell

What does "Show don't tell" mean? It is a technique used in many kinds of texts to allow the readers to see the story through action, words, thoughts, senses, and feelings, other than through the authors description or exposition.

The buildings were tall - I was standing next to buildings that were lofty in the sky.

Sarah was upset - Sarah fell on her knees sulking with tears pouring out of her eyes.

She was so happy to see him - She had an mighty grin on her face, as he walked towards her.

The lake was beautiful - The lake glittered up as the sun shone above the water.

Parihaka (Peaceful Resistance) - Social Studies

 Hi there,

Today I will be writing about what I have recently learnt in Social Studies. We started our new task Parihaka. We are continuing on with our maps, locating and finding information. What is Parihaka? Parihaka is a village in the North Island, back then about 1600 troops attacked western Taranaki settlement of Parihaka.

Questions:

What is the main message of this song?

To encourage people to never give up and stand up against the unfair care of people, and to speak up and spread awareness.

Parihaka by Tim Finn Tim Finn & Herbs

My friend, My friend, I hate to see you suffer,

Events conspire to bring us to our knees,

My friend, my friend, you've taken this the wrong way,

Rise up, defend yourself, never give in,

Look to the sky, the spirit of Te Whiti,

The endless tide is murmuring his name.

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,

And even at the darkest hour,

His presence will remain.

I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

Te Whiti he used the language of the spirit,

Then stood accused, the madman and his dream,

He saw the train go roaring through the tunnel,

He heard the voice travel on the magic wire,

But he loved the silence of the river,

He watched the dog piss on the cannon's wheel.

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,

And even at the darkest hour,

His presence will remain.

I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

One day you'll know the truth,

They can't pull out the roots,

Come and take me home,

To weep for my lost brother.

They gather still, the clouds of Taranaki,

His children's children wearing the white plume,

So take me for the sins of these sad islands,

The wave still breaks on the rock of Rouhotu.

And when you taste the salt that's on your pudding,

And when you taste the sugar in your soup,

Think of Te Whiti, he'll never be defeated,

Even at the darkest hour,

His presence will remain,

I'll sing for you the song of Parihaka,

Come to Parihaka,

Weep for my lost brother,

The spirit of nonviolence,

Has come to fill the silence, Come to Parihaka.

What line explains their passive resistance method?

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,

And even at the darkest hour,

His presence will remain.

I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

What does "you can't pull out the roots" refer to?

The way that I interpret this question is: You can't take away my culture, heritage and my community.

Give evidence of their determination:

Rise up, defend yourself, never give in, Look to the sky, the spirit Te Whiti.

How does this song show the significance of Parihaka?

It is telling you about Parihaka and how it connects to the world. It shows how they overcame it with their faith, hope, beliefs and working together.

What makes an event significant?

What makes one event significant is the impact they were able to make.

How many people are affected?

About 1600 troops were affected including Te Whiti and Tohu were apprehended.

How long were people affected?

People were affected for centuries and even now.

To what extent were people affected?

People involved in the Parihaka were taken from their homes, some were arrested and women were also raped during the attack.

Haiku Poems - English

 Hi there,

This week in English I have learned about Haiku poems. For those who don't know, a Haiku poem is a Japanese short-form poem. The rules of this poem is to have three sentences in total, including 5,7,5 syllables. In this slideshow I have written four Haiku poems about the four seasons Winter, Autumn, Spring and Summer.
