Social Studies: Eco-Tourism

Today in Social Studies, we were set another task to complete which is about Eco-Tourism. We need to write three paragraphs answering these three questions. I hope you enjoy this post.

- What is Eco-Tourism?

Eco-Tourism was created in the 1980s by an Academic Adventurer, Clause-Dieter. The definition present today is, a form of tourism involving responsible travel to natural destinations, minimal harmful impact on the environment, building environmental awareness among visitors, and improving local people's well-being. It is directed towards an exotic, often threatened and natural environment. The first general accepted definition of Eco-Tourism is to travel relatively undisturbed or uncontaminated areas with the specific objective of studying, admiring, and enjoying the scenery and its wild plants and animals. Eco-Tourism has many negative and positive benefits to our environment, for instance, negative benefits, the destruction of natural features; overused tracks lead to soil erosion and damage to vegetation. There are areas where they are becoming overused, causing danger. Tourist hotels are dumping waste into rivers producing water pollution. The positive benefits, firstly, it builds cultural and environmental awareness; encouraging positive experiences for visitors as well as hosts, secondly, it minimizes the impact of tourism if on the environment; reducing pollutions, natural habitat loss, increased endangered species etc, and another is the respect for local culture, supports humans right and democratic movement.

- Why is it a growing trend?

Eco-Tourism is a growing trend because it produces useful and helpful results for the environment along with improving the lives of local communities. It is both valuable and sustainable. There are many reasons and benefits why it is a growing trend, these include a higher rate of awareness about the need to protect the environment, it conserves the natural habitats and aquatic species, it encourages positive experience for visitors as well as hosts; minimizing the impact of tourism on the environment and it boosts local people to provide financial benefits in its favour.

- How does tourism help our oceans?

Eco-Tourism helps our oceans by protecting the species that lives in there, decreasing the damage being done by illegal fishermen such as overfishing and bycatch. Acknowledging and watching our actions when dealing with rubbish. Just basically helping it produce better quality ocean waters along with preventing such species to become instinctive and overpopulated.

Social Studies: Overfishing Paragraph

 Hi there,

Today in Social Studies, we were assigned to write a Lawyer Paragraph declaring the two long term negative impacts of Overfishing. Here is the paragraph I have written:

Overfishing has been an ongoing issue and has been around for many decades. It is occurring in our oceans creating many negative consequences. The first example, it can cause overpopulation of other species, when fish being taken out of the oceans builds an imbalance that can destroy the food web and lead to other important marine life, including vulnerable species like sea turtles and corals. The second example, it affects the ecosystem. This is happening because overfishing damages the food chains, other creatures that rely on seafood have to alter and change their environment and characteristics. Animals go into force to travel to distant regions to live. When that occurs, they would be hunted down or imposed out of the place for not being their natural habitat. Another example is that it can increase pollution. Pollution is one of the main issues continuing today; the common pollutants affected are the oceans, environment and marine pollution. Bottom trawling and plastics are the most destructive. Numbers of garbage in the oceans produce water pollution, which can lead to danger to people and our animals to become unsafe. One more example just to set out more awareness of overfishing, it can cause the collapse of the total fish stock. Commercial fishing has made a negative impact on oceans uninhabitable to any form of marine life. As a result, fish populations have decreased by 90 per cent. If this doesn’t resolve, there will be more fish and other seafood sources available. In conclusion, as a result of these reasons we need to urgently prevent this issue of overfishing.

English: Create Your Own Short Films

 Hi there,

Today this blog post is about what we have been doing for the past few weeks in English. We were assigned to create our own films in small groups, relating them to The Merchant of Venice story that we read at the start of the year. In my group was Jayden, Lasa, Camryn and Cruz.

1. What is your short film about? How is this a 're-telling of The Merchant of Venice?

Our film didn't really display any relation to the story Merchant of Venice at all, it was just camera angles on basketball shooting. However, before we started filming we were planning to make our film about Romeo and Juliet but instead, the boys ended up playing basketball.

3. What 2 additional film techniques did you use? What were the intended effects of these?

In our film we had to include the following angles/shots, Full shot, Long shot, Tilt, Pan, Close up, Extreme close up, Mid shot and two more techniques of our choice. We covered a few of the angles in our film like Pan and Close up. There were actually more than two film techniques we used in our film which was Wide shot, Tracking shot, High angle and Worms eyeshot.

These film techniques were intended to...

Tracking shot - To make the audience visual moving with the person and seeing what it's like when shooting the basketball from the player's point of view.

Wide shot - To show the body movement and footwork of the person. To tell the audience who is in the scene and where is the scene set.

4. What were some challenges you encountered while doing this project? What learnings did you gain from these challenges?

What our group found challenging was planning and deciding what we were going to film, especially if it had to identify The Merchant of Venice in it. Overall, in the end, we recorded a decent amount of angle/shots and made it to the point where we have a result to show with you guys.

Lesson learned: You can't do the work without asking for help and not knowing what to do.

5. What would you do differently if you were to do this project again?

I would probably choose carefully with who I might work with instead of working with people I know that won't cooperate with the work. I would also ask for more help when we are stuck and don't know what to do. I have learned my lesson when it comes to group work and noted that I have to pick wisely before confirming right away.

Prezi: Sustainable Fishing

 Hi there,

Today I will be blogging about what we have been working on in Social Studies. The topic we are focusing on is Sustainable Fishing. We have been looking at a new way of presenting our work and have decided to create them on Prezi. This presentation includes 4 main sections as well as The Lawyer Paragraph; Commerical Fishing, By-Catch, Dolphin safe labels and Sustainable ways of fishing. I hope you enjoy reading my Prezi and learn something from this.
