Making a paper clip float

The left photo is the sunken paper clip and the right photo is the floating paper clip with a piece of tissue.

 Today my class and I did a science experiment called making a paper clip float. It's not that amazing but it was easy to do. I did it with my partner Shontelle and it was a success. I was happy and so was my partner. 😁

We needed:

Clean dry paper clip

tissue paper

A beaker filled with water

Pencil

What to do

1. Fill the bowl with water
2. Try to make the paper clip float…not much luck, huh?
3. Tear a piece of tissue paper about half the size of a CARR card.
4. GENTLY drop the tissue flat onto the surface of the water
5. GENTLY place a dry paper clip flat onto the tissue (try not to touch the water or the tissue)
6. Use the eraser end of the pencil to carefully poke the tissue (not the paper clip) until the tissue sinks. With some luck, the tissue will sink and leave the paper clip floating!

It works with a little thing that scientist call it surface tension. Scientist say that there is a sort of skin on the surface of water that might be making the paperclip float. The paper clip is truly not floating, it is being held up by the surface tension.     

Blobs in a bottle

Today in science with my group Hope and Addyson, we made a lava lamp in a empty coke bottle. We each got a turn of adding the ingredients in and it was fun. Our lava lamp didn't do what we expected to be but it was success. 

Oil is lighter than water so stays on top of the water. The quick - Eze go through the oil into the water and start to dissolve. When they dissolve they send bubbles up through the oil.

The ingredients:
3/4 cup if Water
Vegetable oil 
Food coloring
Quick Eze / Mylanta tablets

7AL's Hui

Today was 7Al's / my class Hui. We were performing in front of the whole year 7s and 8s, the performers in my class was very  nervous. Unfortunately I wasn't performing because I have stage fright and I didn't want to talk in front of a lot of people. 

It went really well but there were technical difficulty with the sound. 

Before we started performing, I helped some of my class mates to complete what they were going to say on the stage. 

How to make Sherbet - Science

Sherbet recipe


1tsp of powdered drink crystals (eg refresh)
1/4 tsp citric acid
1/4 tsp tartaric acid
1/4 tsp -baking soda.

Put all ingredients into a zip lock bag, stir with a wooden stick and enjoy.

Evaluate:

Describe effect in mouth / tongue:
Fizzy, sweet, sour
Caused by acids and sugar

Taste: sweet, sour, 
Caused by tartaric acid, citric acid, icing sugar

Acidity / sweetness: When I tasted my sherbet, it felt like it was going to explode in my mouth. It was very sour and tangy. I added water in my sherbet and it just got worse, so I didn't like it.

Finding: I found out that paper with fold down middle, stayed in the air longer than fold, 2 clips, rubber throw. 

Paper with fold down middle was 2s 39.  Fold, 2 clips, rubber throw was 2s 03.
