Slam Poetry - English

In this post I will be talking to about my favourite Slam Poetry. I chose to watch Brad McCormick poetry about "I'm not gay but I'd go gay for John Key. His performance was spot on, he was very fluent and expressive when he was talking, like he knows what he's doing to entertain his audience. It really caught my attention and really made me want to listen. Overall I enjoyed his poetry.

Here are some of my favourite quotes from his poem:

"His voice cuts through me like a knife through overpriced butter"

"He's brave when he speaks because he has the courage to be a leader, but to not bother to sound like one"

Here is the link to the video: I'm not gay but I'd go gay for john key

Sensory Language Paragraph

In this post, I have written a Sensory Language Paragraph describing a scene or picture, using the five senses. (Touch, Smell, Taste, Hear and Sight) We weren't allowed to use the words saw, heard, smelled, tasted, felt. I wrote about the following picture above and I hope you like it.

Sensory Language Paragraph:

The amount of warmth flowing in the air, lingered in the room, made me witness the sound of quietness. As I observed the moving fingers of students, clattering the keys of their Chromebooks. An revolting rush of flavour of the hot air, hit in my mouth giving me a nauseous feeling of sickness in the stomach. The scent of fresh air as the teacher opens the windows, blow against my face allowing me to breath.

Social Studies Slavery - Music Through Time

Hi there,

Today I will be writing about what I have been doing in Social Studies. We started creating maps, studying the Slave Trade Triangle that happened in the late 16th and 19th century. What is the slave trade triangle? Back then, slavery was a big problem in America, they would take people from the Western Africa to treat them as their workers and use them without payment, or in exchange for goods.

What are Spirituals and what do they use them for? Spirituals are songs originating in the United States and created by African Americans. They were originally an tradition that imparted christian values while also describing the hardships of slavery. They used the music in a way for them uplift slaves, give them hope, church/funerals and if allowed weddings, and to be able to communicate with each other to relay secret messages to help them escape. Like wade in the water.

Who is Harriet Tubman? Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist. She is known for escaping and freeing enslaved people. She conducted Underground Railroads from South America to Northern States or to Canada, it was for the slaves to escape to territories where they could be free.

How are these events significant today? The slavery problem from back then connects to today by how we had the black lives matter protesting in America.

Wade in the water was used to tell the slaves to get off the trail and into the water to make sure that the dogs employed by slavers lost their trail.

Wade in the water

Wade in the water
Children wade, in the water
God's gonna trouble the water
Who's that young girl dressed in red
Wade in the water
Must be the children that Moses led
God's gonna trouble the water
Wade in the water, wade in the water children
Wade in the water,
God's gonna trouble the water
Who's that young girl dressed in white
Wade in the water
Must be the children of the Israelite
Oh, God's gonna trouble the water

Wade in the water is another way of saying walk on the water to point out to get off the ship and into the water because as stated earlier, going through the water makes the dogs not be able to track them.

Drawing for Tone, Texture and Proportion

Today this post will be about what we have done for the past weeks in Art. I have two photos of my drawings, they are not completed yet but I hope I can improve on them during more Art classes/lessons.

What is Tone? Tone refers to the relatives lightness or darkness of a colour.

What do I want to improve on? I want to improve in my shading and drawing objects. I want to have better drawing skills.

Reflection summary

Today I will be writing a Critical Literacy text for Wananga about a movie trailer called A Quiet Place.  We will be doing this every Friday. I hope you enjoy.

Question: What do the images suggest?

Title: A Quiet Place

Type: Movie Trailer

Creator/Director: John Krasinski

Purpose: To captivate the viewers heed.

Date: April 2018

The images in the A Quiet Place Trailer, directed by John Krasinski, suggest tense, fear and scary, which shows and tells us what the whole film will be like. For instance, we see the actors facial expressions, emotions and movement, the lighting, the dark colours and background music/sound effects. I believe the reason for this is to help show the audience what intentions the movie has.

Metaphors and Similes

Hi there,

Today this is a blog post about Metaphors and Similes. What is a Metaphor? What is a Simile? I will be telling you the definitions of both.

What is a Metaphor?
A Metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to make comparison between two things that aren't alike but do have something in common. For example "Tom's eyes were ice as he stared at her".

What is a Simile?
A Simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind. A Simile is using words such as like or as. For example "You were as brave as a lion" and "She swims like a fish".

Language Features - English

Hi there,

Today this blog post will be about what I have been doing in English. We started our first topic Creative Writing. In Creative Writing we got assigned tasks to complete once a week. I started working on Language Features. In this task we had to choose three terms that we don't already know and research the definition, an example and the effect of each of them. I displayed this in a slideshow and I hope you learn something from this.

Physical/Chemical Change

Title: Physical or Chemical Change ( Heating ZnO )

Hypothesis: I have no clue

Equipment: Sample of ZnO (Zinc oxide)

- Heat Source - Hot plates

- Scales

- Heat proof container - Evaporating dish

- Tongs

- Heat proof mat

Method:

1. Get sample of ZnO in an evaporating.

2. Weigh the ZnO and Container - Record weight.

3. Heat container and ZnO on hot plate.

4. Observe any changes - Use phone for before and after photos. (video)

5. Take off heat and put on heat proof mat.

6. Let cool - observe - photos.

7. Re weigh.

Results: The powder had changed into a light green colour when the heat started getting hotter. I think this is a chemical change because the colour changed and it cannot be reversed. The weigh of our powder before was 36g, then changed to 35g during the heating process.

Conclusion: At the end the experiment was good and I didn't have an hypothesis.
